Industry guidance holds that a properly sized entrance matting system captures the large majority of the dirt and moisture tracked into a building. The key is treating the entrance as three zones, not one mat.
Zone 1 — Scrape
At and just outside the door, aggressive scraper and grit-rated rubber infills knock off the heaviest grit and standing water. This is where an aluminum profile system earns its keep.
Zone 2 — Absorb
Inside the threshold, ribbed carpet and textile infills pull residual moisture from the sole of the shoe. Zoning these infills across one mat keeps the transition continuous.
Zone 3 — Dry
A final drying run finishes the job before the visitor reaches the finished floor. As a rule of thumb, more entrance run length means cleaner, safer floors and lower cleaning costs downstream.
